The Canadian government has released new instructions regarding the Parents and Grandparents Sponsorship Program for 2025. Notably, the program will only accept applications received in 2024, with a maximum of 15,000 sponsorship applications authorized for processing in 2025. These applications pertain to permanent resident visas under the family class, specifically for sponsors’ parents or grandparents.
Here are the key points of the new instructions:
Application Limitation
- Only 2024 Applications Accepted: Only sponsorship applications received in 2024 will be considered for processing in the 2025 calendar year, which spans from January 1, 2025, to December 31, 2025.
- Maximum Quota: A total of 15,000 sponsorship applications under family class for parents and grandparents will be accepted for processing in 2025.
Potential Amendments and Future Instructions
- Ministerial Amendments: The maximum number of applications may be amended through subsequent instructions from the Minister of Citizenship and Immigration.
- No Additional 2025 Applications: Unless there are new instructions from the Minister, no other permanent resident visas or sponsorship applications for parents or grandparents will be processed in 2025.
Processing Order and Conditions
- Order of Processing: Applications meeting the established conditions will be processed in the order they are received by the Department.
- Humanitarian Requests: Requests under subsection 25(1) of the Act from outside Canada that accompany unaccepted applications will not be processed.
Disposition of Applications
- Return of Non-Compliant Applications: Any application failing to meet the established conditions will be returned to the applicant.
Effective Date
- Implementation: These instructions take effect on January 1, 2025.
