In response to India’s decision to limit immunities for all but 21 Canadian diplomats and dependents in Delhi by October 20, 2023, Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) is strategically optimizing its operational presence in India. The staff count in India will be reduced from 27 to 5, effective immediately. While IRCC remains committed to accepting and processing applications from India, the downsizing of staff is anticipated to impact processing times.
Notably, a significant portion of applications from India is already processed globally, with 89% of the country’s applications being handled through our expansive international network. The remaining 5 IRCC staff based in India will concentrate on tasks necessitating an in-country presence, including urgent processing, visa printing, risk assessment, and supervision of key partners.
Clients from India should be prepared for some delays in the coming months, affecting overall processing times, response times to inquiries, and the return of visas or passports. Despite these adjustments, Canada maintains a robust connection with Indian citizens and remains open and welcoming, whether for visits, work, study, reuniting with loved ones, or pursuing permanent residence in the country.
Navigating these changes, IRCC assures its commitment to facilitating immigration processes for Indian applicants and sustaining the enduring bond between Canada and its valued Indian community.
